I am the Horse from the South

The Yellow Horse or Palomino (Color) has a very significant role in the story and to the Arikara people.  In the story, Buffalo, used to kill and eat Humans, until he is challenged by the Yellow Horse to a race, and is beaten.

The Creator (Chief that Sits Above) sees this defeat as a means to change the order of things and so, the humans learn to hunt the buffalo instead.The Creator places four colored horses in each of the cardinal directions; the west-Sorrel horse, the North-White horse, the east-Black horse and the South-Yellow horse. The color yellow is very significant, in that it represents the Arikara’s maternal spiritual being, Mother Corn
