Montana Traveler's Check

This $393.83 bank draft from the L. H. Hershtield Brother bank of Helena Montana was dated just two months before the Sioux Chief Sitting Bull led his people from Canada to Fort Buford Montana to surrender on July 20, 1888. Sitting Bull said, "I wish it to be remembered that I was the last man of my tribe to surrender my rifle."  H e was held at Fort Randall as a prisoner of war until he rejoined his tribe at Standing Rock Reservation in May 1883.
