"Monte Yellow Bird Sr., better known in the art world as Black Pinto Horse, is devoted to a positive expression of the harmonic balance between humanity and nature. Through his art and teaching, he offers us a multitude of gifts, and his optimism shines in his motto: "We are on this earth for such a short time, if we're going to shine, shine brightly". Rife with symbolism, Black Pinto Horse's visual expressions honor his spiritual roots, First Nation heritage and Modern and Contemporary art traditions through a bold use of color and design that activates the viewer's imagination. He is motivated by a passionate desire to build connections between the past and present with a hopeful eye toward a brighter future built around empathy and understanding between diverse communities of which the nation is comprised."

I wish to communicate the soul of First Nation artistic expression and the spiritual essence of our people.
I have created a traveling exhibit, “The Poor Boy and the Mud Pony, An Arikara Perspective” that celebrates Arikara traditions which is interwoven with morals and character building.
As a little guy I remember us kids gathering around grandpa with our popcorn, eagerly awaiting his first words which set the stage to the rest of the story. One will experience the interpretive illustrations of my grandfather’s story, “The Poor Boy and the Mud Pony”.
|
I have chosen to illustrate the children's book in the traditional 1800’s ledger art style; it is indicative of the life altering changes that the Northern Plains tribes were subject to at the hands of their oppressors lending to the idea of transitions.
The themes found within “The Poor Boy and the Mud Pony” are dreams, leadership and caring for Creation. In a time when true leadership is disappearing within our societies, it is critical for our young people to be able to recognize, understand and value true leadership, as well as be empowered to believe in themselves and have dreams.

| Right: FIRST PLACE, "Watch the Birdie"- this piece could not be denied and won its category. Congratulations! Click on image |
“I was impressed with the attention to detail…the shading of the eagle feathers...as well as the designs of the beaded ornamentation to the outfits led me to vote for this drawing. There was also a sense of humor about the drawing as illustrated by the "Birdie" and the faithful "Dog"…Monte's ledger drawing was well executed and deserved a first place ribbon."
