Hidatsa Sunflower
9" x 12", Colored Pencil and pen and ink on Antique ledger paper, Northern Creamery Co. 1924 cir.
Private Collector - Little Rock AR
This floral depiction is a tribute to Buffalo Bird Woman (Maxi'diwiac) a very prominent Hidatsa woman ca. (1839-1932) and the season of the Sunflower planting moon. Buffalo Bird woman lived a very simple and traditional lifestyle during the transition from Like a Fishhook Village to the Fort Berthold reservation. The Sunflower planting moon season was not only a beginning of the planting season but a spiritual partnership between the Hidatsa people and mother earth. |

Private Collector - Plains MT
Designed on a McCall’s stationary regarding a fashion stand in the beginning World War I from New York to Plaza North Dakota. The wife’s domestic creativity of making clothing for their husbands continued from one generation to another as well as from indigenous tribal people to a western expansion of European homesteaders. An undecorated war shirt waits to be completed as a well deserved last look of a newly designed elk tooth dress is finished. |
