Two Eagle Ponies

As a little guy I remember us kids gathering around grandpa with our popcorn, eagerly awaiting his first words which set the stage to the rest of the story.  If one of us kids spoke while grandpa was storytelling or fidgeted around, he would simply stand up and walk away.  We learned quickly to be quiet and sit still because we knew a wonderful story was about to be told.

Sweet Buffalo Medicine
Grandpa was an excellent storyteller, captivating our hearts and minds.  His stories held secrets to living a better life, making good choices for yourself and your family, being safe and other beautiful things.  I was recently awarded the First Peoples Fellowship, in which I am working towards illustrating and authoring, “The Porcupine and the Buffalo”, a story that was passed onto me to teach about boundaries and being careful about the people you bring close.  It is one of my favorite stories to tell during my educational programs, very popular, loved by young and old; a very successful tool to teach about healthy relationships.
I have a message to share and feel honored to be able to pass on the messages within the bright colors, symbols, 3-dimensional elements and images I apply to the canvas as well as antique ledger paper.  I share in my programs, “Every time I say my dad’s name, I make him live and every time I do well, my ancestors smile upon me”.

Rife with symbolism, my visual expressions honor my spiritual roots, First Nation heritage and Modern and Contemporary art traditions through a bold use of color and design that activates the viewer's imagination.

While working in oils, I like to add multimedia elements such as elk’s teeth, deer dew claws, horsehair, feathers (simulated) and beads.  My focus on collaborating First Nation images and objects with 20th century “Expressionism” has given me a better understanding of myself and has been the key to establishing my own style of works; a reflection of pride for my people and a respect for life.

Harvest Moon Ball

I enjoy educating the public on one method of preserving the history and culture of a people- oral tradition.  As a historian, I am well versed and can elaborate upon the art and traditions of the First Nation people, past and present.

A “winter count” was a visual depiction of symbols, pictographic images, and markings on buffalo hides that documented important events and recorded historical information for Native American tribes.  So that the people’s history would not be forgotten, the stories were shared and passed on by the Winter Count Keeper.

As the herds of buffalo dwindled and the First Nation people were forced onto reservations, ledger paper was one of the materials accessible for drawing.  Around the mid- 1800's a new style of art evolved that was a more individual account to the person's accomplishments- ledger art.

Going to antique shops across the United States, I have come to collect some really interesting used ledger paper; specifically from the 1800’s – early 1900’s.  Using pictorial illustrations, I translate a First Nation story, complimenting the subject of the ledger and its time period.  When finished, I am able to use them as educational examples, discussing their historical and aesthetic relevance.

The Voice of the Painted Bull

He Goes Ahead

Good Night Yellow Bird
Devoted to a positive expression of the harmonic balance between humanity and nature,  I am continually motivated by a passionate desire to build connections between the past and present with a hopeful eye toward a brighter future built around empathy and understanding between diverse communities of which the nation is comprised.  Through my art and teaching, I offer a multitude of gifts, and my optimism shines in my motto: "We are on this earth for such a short time, if we're going to shine, shine brightly".
